Congratulations, MGMT! You’re Releasing Your Second Album!

MGMT-02-011-2_R2We swear that’s the last time we’ll do that. (Maybe not.) As previously reported, MGMT’s second album is titled Congratulations, and according to SPIN, it’s coming out April 13 in the U.S. on Columbia records  The album was produced by MGMT and Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, E.A.R., Spectrum) and was recorded throughout 2009 in upstate New York, Malibu and Brooklyn. Check out the tracklist after the jump — and no, you’re not seeing things: there is a song titled “Lady Dada’s Nightmare.”

The Air Force Allegedly Tries to Rip Off White Stripes, Sucks at it Anyway

UPDATE: The advertisement has been removed from the Air Force’s website.

So did you catch that ridiculous-looking Air Force Reserve TV ad on Super Bowl Sunday, or were you getting more chips from the pantry? Well, if you didn’t, here’s a quick summary: there’s a bunch of guys doing a bunch of EXTREME STUFF to the White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With a Girl” — or, rather, a really shitty instrumental cover. How “bad” is it? Let’s put it this way: imagine one of those “Shredding” videos on YouTube, only if they were totally not a joke at all. (Haven’t heard of the “Shredding” videos? Check one out above.)

Now, we understand that it’s hard for anybody to live up to Jack White’s massive talent — but really, Air Force Reserve? You couldn’t get someone who could, you know, play the guitar?

Of course, the White Stripes are pissed — we would be too, and, let’s face it, so would you. Jack and Meg — along with Jack’s record label, Third Man Records — issued a statement via the Third Man website condemning the song-jacking, stating, “We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of The White Stripes, our publishers, label or management…We have not licensed this song to the Air Force Reserve and we plan to take strong action to stop the ad containing this music.” Read the full statement here.

Look at the bright side: the video for the White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With A Girl” is still AWESOME. Check it out above.

Live: The Soft Pack’s Record Release Show @ Cake Shop

softpacklive

Alongside our FADER bros, we were very jazzed to throw our backs into presenting The Soft Pack’s free record release show in NYC at the Cake Shop last Friday night. Lots of friends and a few vagrants came out to sweat along to Soft Pack songs old and brand spanking new. That said, their self-titled full-length debu that came out on Kemado last Tuesday. You should buy it. Wait! Before you do that, check out “Answer To Yourself” and “Extinction” after the jump. They’ll explain why.

No Age? More Like NEW Age

Hey, you know what’s better than an unreleased No Age song? THREE unreleased No Age songs. And if you head over to the mighty Daytrotter blog at this very moment, that is exactly what you’ll get. The “skaters, but not entirely skate-punk” duo burn through new jams “N.G.F.S” and “Depletion” with typical aplomb — and check out the ambient-skree of “Hard Trash,” which was the foundation for “You’re a Target,” a highlight off of last year’s Losing Feeling stopgap EP.

Click here to kick out the (unreleased) jams — and check out the video for “You’re A Target” above (via Pitchfork.tv), for good measure.

Jónsi’s New Video Establishes Our Sigur Rós-Marilyn Manson Connection

Alright, so we were sitting here watching this clip for Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi’s “Go Do,” and we came to a heavy realization: how much does Jónsi look like Marilyn Manson in the video for “The Beautiful People” here? Seriously, between the pale-white face paint, the herky-jerky, sped-up camera footage, and the quasi-bondage gear, there’s not much separating the perpetual shock-rocker from Iceland’s falsetto-pop master. Well, maybe there are a few differences — for one, if “Go Do” was a Marilyn Manson video, we’re pretty sure all those birds fluttering around Jónsi would have their heads torn off or something. Also, Jónsi’s music is, you know, enjoyable.

Check out the video for “Go Do” (via Pitchfork TV) above — as well as the clip for Manson’s “The Beautiful People,” for comparison’s sake. Jó’nsi’s Go comes out April 6 on XL.

Kids have it rough these days. Yeah, they’ve got cell phones and iPods and personal shoppers, but have you seen the crap they’re handed in the TV department? It’s uncool. Which is exactly why we’re so jazzed that Pee Herman has gone back to his roots and taken the Pee Herman Show back to the [...]
