A clip from the documentary It Might Get Loud, which comes out in L.A. and New York this Friday, has been released on the Interwebs, and further demonstrates the fact that Jack White bridges the gap between man and god. In order to test White’s stripped down, fast approach to music, director Davis Guggenheim challenges him to write and record a song on camera, and he does it. In under ten minutes. And the song, “Fly Farm Blues,” can now be purchased on iTunes. We can only expect that more feats of guitar-shredding. song-smithing greatness from Mr. White as well as The Edge and Jimmy Page lie within Get Loud. (via MTV)

Technology is moving in leaps and bounds, and this latest development benefits fans of electronic music and bikini-clad models alike. In this video, electronic musician Calvin Harris paints the hands and feet of fifteen young ladies as well as his own with electrically charged paint, and then organizes their clapping and stomping to produce a perfect rendition of his single “Ready for the Weekend.” The first ever “humanthesizer” not only works beautifully, it ain’t bad to look at either, seeing as how all of the models are half naked. The internet is a confusing place. This song clip, seeming to be a new Radiohead track, appeared unexplicably this morning on the band’s fan site At Ease. Although “These Are My Twisted Words” sounds very Yorke-ian (Ed: yikes) , the band has yet to officially confirm that the song is one of theirs. Since they’re done with recording and releasing albums, perhaps this is their new, sneaky preferred method of delivering music to the masses. (via p4k)

Although he has a new album coming out soon through Saddle Creek, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson has debuted a video for “Woodfriend,” off his self-titled debut to tie us over in the mean time. Despite the song title, the video features more trippy effects and illustrations via Houses in Motion than it does affable lumberjacks, but that’s okay with us. His follow-up album Summer of Fear, produced by TVOTR’s own Kyp Malone, comes out October 20, which is in the fall not the summer. Should be Fall of Fear. (via Stereogum)

Tom Waits has served as an artistic muse for everyone from Jim Jarmusch to Scarlett Johansson, and now photographer/director Anton Corbijn will publish a book featuring over thirty years of portraits of the gravel-voiced troubadour. The 160-page hardcover entitled Waits/Corbijn, will include 75 color and dutone plates as well as lyrics from major Waits albums, and is set for release through Schirmer/Mosel this fall. In case you can’t get enough of these two after this book, keep your eyes peeled for a Tom Waits appearance as the Devil in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and Corbijn’s follow-up to Control with his second full-length film, A Very Private Gentleman. Nick Cave, Australian Renaissance man most famous for his excellent band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Edit: The Birthday Party?), is all set to release his second novel, entitled The Death of Bunny Munro. The official press release describes the book as follows:

Bunny Munro sells beauty products and the dream of hope to the lonely housewives of the south coast of England. Set adrift by his wife’s suicide and struggling to keep a grip on reality, Bunny does the only thing he can think of: he hits the road, with his nine-year-old son in tow. As their bizarre and increasingly frenzied road trip shears into a final reckoning, Bunny finds that the revenants of his world – decrepit fathers, vengeful ghosts, jealous husbands and horned psycho-killers – have emerged from the shadows and are seeking to exact their toll.

His tale of an Avon man gone wrong will be available to the masses on September 8 through Faber & Faber, Inc., and Penguin will release a new edition of his first and only other novel And the Ass Saw the Angel, originally published in 1989. In other Nick Cave news, he and fellow Bad Seed Warren Ellis have composed the soundtrack for the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s classic novel The Road, set for release later this year.

Rumors have been confirmed regarding a Bob Dylan Christmas album to come out in time for this December 25th. The songs “Must Be Santa,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem” have already been recorded at Jackson Browne’s recording studio in Santa Monica, CA. Though Zimmy is no longer in his born-again Christian phase, he apparently remains detached enough from his Jewish heritage to dedicate an album to baby Jesus. He’s not alone in the practice, as one of pop music’s best Christmas albums ever, A Christmas Gift For You, was recorded by fellow Jew and recent jail bait Phil Spector. However, aside from that one, the standards remain pretty damn low in the Christmas album world. (via Billboard)

Interpol’s Paul Banks has debuted the video for his single “Games For Days” under his solo moniker , Julian Plenti. The film noir-ish video, directed by Javier Aguilera, features a cameo by Metric’s Emily Haines as a femme fatale, while Banks plays good and evil versions of himself. Bruce Foxton, former bassist of legendary English mod punk band The Jam, has decided to make peace with the band’s singer Paul Weller. After Weller left the band in 1982, Foxton started the ‘reunion’ band From the Jam, performing original Jam songs with a Weller imitator, Russell Hastings, in order to keep the dream alive. Needless to say the Modfather was peeved. After all these years, the two are finally on speaking terms again, but on an original Jam reunion, Foxton says, “I don’t even discuss it with him, I know the answer.” However, he claims a new Hastings-written From the Jam album is a possibility: “If we think we’ve got enough good songs we will put out an album,” he said. “We will push on. I don’t know how quickly it will be but we’ve been going into a little studio and trying. Sometimes nothing comes of it and you think ‘I’ll just go off and play a round of golf again’. We will see how it goes.” And so, the timeless debate continues: which is more important, music or golf? (via NME)

Remember when Garth Brooks had that alt-rawker alter-ego Chris Gaines and everybody was really embarrassed for him? L.A. punks The Bronx also have a seemingly dubious musical alter-ego, but unlike Gaines, it’s not totally embarrassing. The band are set to release an album under the guise of El Bronx (how secretive and sneaky!) on August 25th. El Bronx, true to Mariachi tradition, features horns, acoustic guitars, Charro costumes and the help of someone of actual Mexican descent, Vincent Hidalgo (son of Los Lobos‘ David Hidalgo) on guitarrón. Listen to the surprisingly serene “Quinceañera” at SPIN , watch the video above and expect an extensive tour on which El Bronx will hopefully encourage some real Mariachi collaboration onstage.

Rumors have been floating around the internets for a while now about a collaboration between Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters‘ Dave Grohl, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. Now, a confirmation of sorts has come in the form of a last-minute announcement of a Lollapalooza aftershow to be held August 9th at the Metro, with the three bands’ logos on the flier. Apparently the three musicians call themselves Them Crooked Vultures, and have been working on a studio album for three years. So far nothing has been officially confirmed, but the cryptic post isn’t too hard to decode. (via Consequence of Sound)

Modest Mouse have released the music video for their single “King Rat,” which Heath Ledger was in the middle of directing around the time of his death. Ledger had conceptualized the animated video with The Masses in order to raise awareness about illegal whaling off the coast of Australia through a clever role reversal. Proceeds from iTunes downloads of the video will go towards the nonprofit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The song can be heard on Modest Mouse’s EP No One’s First, and You’re Next, which also comes out today. (via Spin)

Respectable musicians writing songs for lowbrow teen movies continues to be in vogue with Jarvis Cocker’s contribution to the upcoming Forgetting Sarah Marshall spinoff, Get Him to the Greek. Mr. Cocker has written three songs for Russell Brand’s character, a pathetic rockstar attempting to prepare a tour. Looks like they gave the costume department a break with that casting decision (ZING!). About the songs, Jarvis says they’re “rather silly, but it’s a silly film.” The movie also stars Jonah Hill and Rose Byrne, and is scheduled for release in 2010. (via Billboard)

Weird Al Yankovic has released his latest parody video, and this time Jack and Meg White are the brunt of the joke. The song, entitled “C.N.R.,” is a bluesy ballad about American actor Charles Nelson Reilly in the style of “Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground” off of The Stripes‘ 2001 breakout album, White Blood Cells. Timely! The video features many not-quite-animated characters with larger than average heads (a la JibJab), third nipples, and diamond excreting. Looks like Charles Nelson Reilly is the new Chuck Norris. (via TwentyFourBit)

Dischord Records, D.C.’s most trusted name in punk and hardcore, has announced that they will be reissuing Gray Matter’s albums Food For Thought and Take It Back on vinyl this September, with MP3 download freebies. The Take It Back reissue will also feature the four songs off their 1991 double 7″. The Dischord family will also be working with Desoto Records in order to reissue Jawbox’s excellent For Your Own Special Sweetheart, to include three tracks not on the original. Finally, Joe Lally, ex-Fugazi bassist, has announced plans for a tour of Japan in October and the UK and Ireland in November. (via punknews)

While Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen was out celebrating her 16th birthday with her band, Courtney Love was at home on her computer sending tweets of hate her way. Ms. Love spewed pure wrath towards the teen star in several posts, one after the other, directed “@taylorxmomsen,” which turns out is not an actual Twitter account. She rants:

Atlas Sound (aka Bradford Cox) and Broadcast are teaming up for a North American tour, starting October 15, dates of which are featured below. This will be Broadcast’s first live appearance in the good old U.S. of A in four long years. We expect the tour will feature performances of lots of new jams by both acts, as they both have new albums on the way: Atlas Sound’s LP Logos drops via Kranky on October 20th and Broadcast’s latest EP (title TBA) will also be available through Warp in October. Ticketmaster, the nation’s forerunner in concert ticket distribution, and Live Nation, a new but increasingly powerful ticketing service, have threatened to merge and become “Live Nation Ticketmaster,” defeating Live Nation’s original purpose as a competitor. Luckily, the government seems to be doing what it’s meant to and lawmakers of all political persuasions stepped forward yesterday, urging the Justice Department to view the merger with “great skepticism.” The Chairman of the Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights Subcommittee, Senator Herb Kohl, has expressed concerns about the merger stifling competition in the entertainment industry and potentially violating vertical integration laws. The concerns seem particularly valid in light of recent Ticketmaster “mishaps” involving Bruce Springsteen concert tickets. Luckily it looks like government officials, Republicans and Democrats alike, don’t like paying an $8.00+ service charge on concert tickets either. Where are Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam when you need them? (via RS)

French-born singer Manu Chao has announced the release of a uniquely awesome benefit project entitled “La Colifata.” Created in 1991, La Colifata is a radio station broadcast from within a psychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires and uses media as therapeutic treatment, allowing the patients to express themselves and create a social link with people outside of the hospital. In order to help the program, Chao has produced an album featuring 20 songs by patients, and is available here in return for a “pay what you want” donation.

On their first tour as an ensemble since 2005’s reunion, the Pixies are hitting the road once again to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1989 opus Doolittle. As Black Francis puts it, “We wanted to do something special for Doolittle’s 20th anniversary, and we thought his was a good opportunity to play all of the songs from that album, something we don’t normally do at a regular gig.” The tour kicks off in Europe, where most dates have already sold out, but the U.S. leg begins on November 4th in L.A., and includes three dates in New York City. Some tickets go on sale as early as this Saturday, August 1st, so be sure to check out your venue of choice’s website in the near future for details. The tour also coincides with the release of the limited edition box set, Minotaur, allowing you to indulge all of your Pixies related desires this fall.

If you’ve ever read the Missed Connnections section on Craigslist.com, you already know how hilarious and bizarre it can be. But now that portion of the site is being used for indie music gushing… Cass McCombs praise, specifically. Featuring choice gems as “stellar reminscences” and “magnetized and now mystified, regretful and teeming with gratitude,” Mr. McCombs, a married man, has obviously made quite an impression upon this anonymous admirer, who unknowingly sat next to him before a show. Cass, if you’re out there reading this, know that you are loved… in a very poetic, creepy way.

Remember that time we streamed Modest Mouse’s “Whale Song” exclusively for you? On August 4th, the band is set to release an EP entitled No One’s First, And You’re Next, featuring that very song, amongst seven others. Six of the songs on the upcoming EP were featured on limited promo 7″ singles, and the song “King Rat” was a free 7″ which came along with purchase of 2007’s We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, and “I’ve Got it All (Most)” was a B-side to the “Float On” single and is currently out of print. That means that this EP is a godsend for all you record player-less Modest Mouse fans out there. But never fear vinyl junkies, the EP will be released on vinyl on August 18th for you too.

Mike Kinsella is all set to release his fifth album under the moniker Owen, entitled New Leaves, but fans can expect a few changes in his latest work… hence the name. Since 2006’s At Home With Owen, the songwriter has acquired a wife and baby, and these personal changes can be felt in his latest music. Kinsella shares, “Being a lot more settled has freed up space in my mind that was once occupied by frivolous romantic social interactions to be used for thinking critically about broad social interactions and issues.” Additionally, he has announced that he will be performing with a full band for the first time ever at his record release shows on September 18th at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago. New Leaves will be available to the masses (that means you) on September 22nd through Polyvinyl Records, but you can listen to the single “Good Friends, Bad Habits” right here, right now.

Ever found yourself thinking, “Hmmm, I wonder what the hell Black Francis meant in, oh, every single Pixies song…”? You’re not alone. And lucky for you, in this interview with Minnesota Public Radio’s Mary Lucia, he takes the time to explain some of his songwriting ideas, concepts and inspirations. And by that, we mean he talks a lot about hangovers and lemurs, but it’s still totally awesome. Additionally, the interview is peppered with acoustic versions of Pixies songs, including this lovely rendition of ‘Velouria,’ featured above.

Apparently ’tis the season for solo projects! First it was Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, and now it’s Alec Ounsworth’s turn to break free from his band Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah. Why not, they’re on hiatus anyway. His first independent effort, entitled Mo Beauty, will be released on October 20th through Anti- Records, and he’s getting by with a little help from his friends: collaborators include George Porter Jr. (Meters), Stanton Moore (Galactic), Robert Walter (Greyboy Allstars), and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson. Make space on your coffee table, because on September 15th Algonquin Books is releasing Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records. Written by author John Cook and the founding father-and-mother themselves, Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, the book will include first-hand accounts regarding the history of the independent label Merge Records, as well as exclusive stories about Spoon, Arcade Fire, the Magnetic Fields, Superchunk, Lambchop, and many other Merge veterans. Other goodies to be found inside include hundreds of band photos, album art, handwritten lyrics, concert posters, playlists, and an introduction by Ryan Adams. If it’s even half as poetic as his now notorious (and defunct) blog posts, that alone will make the book purchase worth it.

The line-up for the the third incarnation of the Treasure Island Music Festival has been revealed, and it’s rather impressive. All going down on an island in the middle of the San Fransisco Bay, the show spans two days: the more electro-dancey acts hold it down on Saturday October 17th, while indie rockers of all stripes and disarray will close things on Sunday the 18th. In addition to a slew of fantastic bands, the weekend will feature an interactive art tent, a vendor village with local designers and delicious food/drank, and a 60-foot Ferris wheel. Where else can you watch Wayne Coyne roll around in his plastic bubble while flying high on a carnival ride? A limited number of 2-day and VIP ticket packages went on sale today, but the rest of the single day passes will be available this Friday the 17th at 10 a.m.

Before Trent Reznor disappears forever, he’s going on tour with Danish trio Mew. In addition to the dates with Nine Inch Nails, the band will be playing a smattering of headlining shows along the way, dates of which are below. On these headlining dates fans can expect to hear new tracks off their upcoming release, entitled No more stories, are told today, I’m sorry, they washed away, No more stories the world is grey, I’m tired, Let’s wash away. Yes, that’s the album’s name, and it’s coming out on August 25th. For added incentive to see them live, lead singer Jonas Bjerre provides visuals which last well after the band’s set for a “dream-like experience”, and we’re pretty sure you can’t find that on iTunes.

Instead of folding its cards in light of the economic crisis, Pandora Radio has a new royalty deal with SoundExchange and has raised $35 million worth of funds through Greylock Partners. With these new deals and investors, the free music streaming website will be able to hold its ground for the time being. However, users who listen to more than 40 hours of music per week through the website will now be required to pay a fee of 99 cents per month, and this change will affect about ten percent of Pandora’s listeners. But in this economy, we think that less than a buck per month for unlimited music is still pretty darn good. (via cnet)

The genre-bending instrumental trio known as Russian Circles will be releasing their third album, Geneva, on October 20th through Suicide Squeeze. Produced by Brandon Curtis of the Secret Machines, Geneva promises a slew of hypnotic shred epics, the tracklist for which is below. Catch them live this summer on July 18th at Dudefest in Indianapolis, IN, and keep a look out for more supporting tour dates.

We told you last month that the Dodos‘ new album will be coming out September, which is still true, but you don’t have to wait that long to hear it. In order to avoid the messiness of an album leak on the internet, the band have decided to leak Time to Die themselves, and it’s streaming right here in its entirety for your listening pleasure. There is also a fairly awkward video message from the band for your viewing pleasure which explains the release. That’s 2/5 senses pleased right there. If that’s not good enough, your sense of touch will also be pleased on September 15th when the album is released physically. As for taste and smell, you’re on your own.

Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor has declared NIN’s touring days done and over with. We highly recommend fans check out NIN’s last ever tour dates before Reznor holes up in his basement for the rest of his life. Though it might be the last we see, it won’t be the last we hear from Reznor; he claims he is quitting touring in order to pour more energy into making quality music in the form of NIN and other collaborations, as well as non-musical projects. Additionally, he says he’d “never want to be Gene Simmons, an old man who puts on makeup to entertain kids, like a clown going to work.” We hate to break it to you, Trent, but Gene Simmons has always been a man who puts on makeup to entertain kids.
