According to reliable sources, Fox Searchlight is reportedly in negotiations to produce a film based on the book “I Slept with Joey Ramone (A Family Memoir).” The book, which is set to hit stores in December, was written by Ramone’s brother Mickey Leigh, who is himself a punk rocker, and Ramones biographer and author of punk insider history Please Kill Me Legs McNeil. While we have no doubt the book will be an entertaining and enlightening read, how the adaptation will turn out is slightly less rosy. First, the problem of casting: the Ramones were pretty distinct looking guys from Forest Hills, and though Williamsburg has its share of dirtbag-y knockoffs, the producers would really need to comb the streets and convince some genuine Queens natives to go full method to get it right. Though, knowing Hollywood, someone has already called Bradford Cox and called him “bro” several times. Problem two: the Lower East Side no longer exists, so they will have to green-screen CBGB back on Bowery and remove the 8,000 glass and steel condos that surround it. Maybe they could just say punk was born in the Whole Foods on Houston Street. Begin anticipating the film now and pick up the book on December 1st. If you’re in NYC, get it directly from Leigh and McNeil at the Barnes & Noble Tribeca on Warren Street, where they will be signing books and doing a Q&A session.

According to information from UK hip hop weekly NME, newly rethroned King of New York Jay-Z (said Jay-Zed in England), has again foregone working with his nuclear babe of a wife Beyonce on the expanded deluxe edition of his new #1 album The Blueprint 3 in favor of ivory pounding alternative it-girl Regina Spektor. We reached Jay for comment and he said, “Yeah, I’m over it. B is great, but I needed a change, and Regina’s music exposes me, naked, to my emotions.” Unfortunately, it was our friend Jay Kleinberg, but he is very reliable. The Jay-Z/Spektor song is simply a sample of Spektor’s “Chemo Limo” for a new track called “Crispy Benjamins.”

Honestly, Kanye West is an undeniable genius. Before anyone has even hashed out whether his VMA mic-snatch from Taylor Swift was a stunt or bona fide drunken meltdown, Kanye is already making new news with this video promo for he and Lady Gaga’s upcoming Fame Kills tour, which promises to be a subtle and classy affair from start to finish, no doubt. What is a little dubious is whether the two will actually alternate top-billing throughout the tour, as they have claimed they will, and who will have the first temper tantrum over haute couture. Over/under is Kanye by Saskatoon. Make your picks in the comments, and view the full tour dates after the jump.

Over the next four minutes, you will see Julian Casablancas, lead singer and final member to go side-projectile from The Strokes, talk about stuff—his new solo album named Phrazes For The Young, The new Strokes album, his favorite new bands, his favorite song, his favorite Pilates instructor, his favorite vestmaker, his favorite type of peanut butter, his favorite ore, his favorite Picasso period etc etc—for the first time in three years. You will also hear snippets from said new album, which sounds like The Strokes made by one guy on many instruments. Don’t act like you’re not excited!
Attempting to pick a favorite movie from John Hughes’ filmography would be near impossible, so instead of trying, we’re taking the easy road and celebrating his easily best soundtrack. Known during his untouchable stretch of classic teen comedy-dramas in the ’80s—Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), Weird Science (1985), The Breakfast Club (1985), Sixteen Candles (1984)—for basically creating the seamless connection between the pitch-perfect scenes on screen and the underground, cutting edge pop music of the score, Hughes’ ultimate achievement on this front ironically never got a proper release. So, to celebrate his life and contribution to ours, here’s a (most likely temporary) link to the long-underrated soundtrack (with an assist from music supervisor Tarquin Gotch) for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Check the tracklist after the jump. So long, John.

Rumors abound that Ryan Gosling was dropped from Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Lovely Bones for having, eh how to put this, a touch of the pudge. And while that is hard to believe coming from the director who so publicly cast his own spare tire into the fires of Mordor, the fact that Gosling and Zach Shield’s music project is called Dead Man’s Bones (signed with Anti-Records) now takes on a new dimension as the band’s and film’s release dates approach. Is Dead Man’s Bones a shot at Jackson? A threat? An insult? Is Lovely Bones Jackson’s way of saying he’s sorry? Actually no, none of that makes any sense but how else can we get you excited about a tracklist and cover art?

Venerable Oxford, Mississippi label Fat Possum has recently been snatching up great new bands as if they knew something everyone else didn’t. Wavves and Crocodiles were the first surprise signings, and now they’ve got former Be Your Own Pet dude Jonah Stein’s band Turbo Fruits coming with a new album named Echo Kid in September. It’s loaded with twangy, loose and scratchy rebel rock that would sound really good as you and your buddy floor it towards the cliff’s edge to impress some girl. Don’t do that, just saying. We’re happy to offer one of Echo Kid’s finest moments—full of whistles and shouts, pounding drums and guitars about to fall apart.
Thom Yorke and his fellows in Radiohead recently recorded “Harry’s Patch (In Memory Of)” as a tribute to the man of the title (must’ve been fun growing up with that name), the UK’s lone surviving soldier from WWI, who passed away at the age of 111 on July 25th from, we are assuming, boredom. 111 years is a longass time to be British (JUST KIDDING DUDES). Patch’s appearance on BBC radio inspired Yorke et al to record this war hymn in an abbey just before his death, as according to Yorke, “The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me… It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us. I hope we do not forget.” The former, fair enough, totally subjective; the latter, some (namely vets of that other World War) would argue that there are still many profound lessons to be gleaned from the millions still living who have fought and continue to fight in wars around the world. Anywayyyy, plenty of lessons for everyone. Listen to the song at Stereogum and buy it (with proceeds going to the British Legion) here.

At some point yesterday, Island Def Jam chairman LA Reid exclaimed that the new Mariah Carey album will come with a 34-page “mini-magazine” which will include ads and editorial content. Said magazine will also include a free cd mix of Eminem freestyles about Mariah and Nick Cannon, a cover illustration of Carey that when folded looks like a ham sandwich and a scratch-and-sniff section that smells like bad ideas. Here’s Reid’s full quote!

“The idea was really simple thinking: ‘We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,’” said Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, a unit of Universal Music Group. “My artists have substantial circulation-when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.”

McCartney recently declared his admiration for the duo’s music and suggested they might collaborate on “some more dancey stuff,” so now that they will most certainly be hanging backstage, expect that pairing to actually happen and for MGMT to become the richest sort of dirty-looking, kind of hippie-vibing kids in all the world.
The Boss is slated to put the E Street hammer down on the UK’s Glastonbury festival tomorrow night and many in England are apparently wondering how they managed to get him there. We’d venture to say it probably involved a check with many zeros on it, but the Guardian posits that his willingness to appear may have been bolstered by some old-fashioned flattery courtesy of fellow Telecaster player and all ’round badass Joe Strummer.

Michael Jackson, the third best selling pop star of all time and probably the most influential artist of the last 50 years, died as a result of cardiac arrest at his home earlier today. From TMZ:

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.

My Morning Jacket’s Jim James will be releasing an EP of George Harrison covers called Tribute To on ATO Records August 4th. The songs listed below, three solo from All Things Must Pass and two Harrison-penned Beatles songs, were recorded shortly after the late great songwriter passed in 2001. Yames/James’ versions will apparently be low-key, acoustic and, we’re sure, good for sparking some incense and reciting mantras.
Tribute To Tracklist:
1.) Long Long Long
2.) Behind That Locked Door
3.) Love You To
4.) My Sweet Lord
5.) Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)
6.) All Things Must Pass

Some of you may have heard that we were in a pretty serious accident today. We are all pretty much fine- all walking and talking and all of that- just a little sore and a little shaken.

After stopping at a fruit stand at about 3pm today, we got back on the highway headed towards Toronto. At about 3:15, on the other side of the highway, a semi-truck moved into the left lane, not seeing the car that was there, and sent the car flying out of control over the meridian and right at us. The car hit us in the back and sent us flying onto our side, at which point we slid quite a ways down the road. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt except for Dave and Brian, but they and all of the rest of us luckily came out fine!

The whole thing was quite surreal; there were hugs and tears when we climbed out of the van. We all feel very fortunate right now to be walking around. Sorry about the canceled shows in Toronto and Montreal! We were really looking forward to coming up there again, but we will make it up to you as soon as possible!

Thank you for your concern and support. Looking forward to getting back out there and continuing to share music with our fans.

We’re just going to throw it out there that this collaboration between current Tripwire feature, King Khan, and former Tripwire feature, Black Lips, will probably sound like “good old rock & roll” and will probably also be a little “crazy” and “wild.” The recording may also have involved dudes spitting on or in each other.

Press release!

When the Black Lips had to flee India after almost getting arrested (long story) and getting their passports confiscated (longer story), they fled to Berlin to hole up with their old pal and label-mate King Khan. Mark Sultan (aka BBQ, one half of King Khan & BBQ Show) also happened to be there, and it happened to be freezing in Berlin that week so no one really wanted to leave the house. So what do a bunch of garage-rock all-stars (and international refugees) do in the middle of winter in cramped conditions? They give birth to an album and band of the same name, The Almighty Defenders. The guys went to Moon Studios and recorded these tracks, brimming with soul, earnest shouts, cries and hand-claps over post-modern gospel-rock anthems.

From Matador:

We are proud to announce the September 22 release of the debut full-length from Girls, entitled Album. The record will be released by True Panther Sounds, the label that released Girls’ debut 7″, “Lust For Life,” last year, in conjunction with Matador.

We love this band to death and are very excited for the world to hear this Album, but seriously what’s next, band’s naming themselves “/” and their albums “.com”? How are we ever going to download this illegally off the internet, Matador? Oh. Nevermind. Good thinking.

According to NME, ravishing beauty and scourge of skinny, troubled British rock stars, Kate Moss, recently decided to make a pool floatie out of her boyfriend Jamie Hince’s laptop. Unfortunately, that laptop contained the only recorded copies of six songs planned for The Kills next album. Hince is said to be despondent, while every other heterosexual male on the face of the earth anticipates a wicked rumble between Kate and Alison Mosshart.

Our question to you commenters is what would Kate Moss have to do to you to make you not want to be her boyfriend anymore?

As an introduction to his recently announced Record Club, Beck posted this cover of Velvet Underground & Nico’s “Sunday Morning” with a vocal assist from Icelandic lady Thorunn Magnusdottir of the band The Honeymoon. Are there Scientologists in Iceland now? If so, how and when did that happen? Presumaby, Beck will put up “I’m Waiting for the Man” next Friday, hopefully with Giovanni Ribisi on flute.

If you enjoy things like really complex vocal layering, men who sing like angels and bands that might just be side projects of weird cults, we highly recommend you check out Luke Temple’s Here We Go Magic, one of the best live bands going right now. They’ll be on tour with Grizzly Bear, who are probably on your mom’s shopping list by now. Huge! Take her to one of the dates listed after the jump, but don’t show her the video for “Fangela,” she’ll think they’re into the dark arts.

God bless the NME for still employing guys like Dan Martin who are willing and able to write long and breathless blog posts about Courtney Love’s return to music under the Hole moniker. Courtney Love is apparently recording new music in Hollywood with an entirely new version (unless you count potential back-up vocals by Melissa Auf der Mar) of her once great band. After the jump, read our favorite paragraph from Martin’s post and watch the video of Love talking a lot about a lot of stuff, including Malcolm Gladwell.

Now, there will be plenty of people who throw rocks at Courtney for bringing back a modified version of Hole for the same reasons that they threw rocks at Corgan for bringing back Smashing Pumpkins. I would raise them that Courtney and Billy are the essences of Hole and the Pumpkins for the same reasons that Liam and Noel are the essence of Oasis. Does anybody question the authenticity of an Oasis without Tony McCarroll, Bonehead and the other one? Thought not.

“Do I really need a MySpace page for this f--king music?" Yes, probably.

The 100-year-old man in a pale, young man’s body known as Jack White recently stated his beef with MySpace and the internet in general in a cantankerous interview with The Ampersand about his new supergroup the Dead Weather:

“Do I really need a MySpace page for this f–king music? Do I really need to do that? There’s a part of me, that just out of spite, says I don’t want to do it because it’s so antithetical to what I do,” Mr. White said.

“I just question what it all means. If a million people see your webpage, how many people actually buy something, buy a record or a song? Feels to me, if you give them a chance to fast forward, rewind, or click off to the next web page, they will do it. But if you take away that opportunity, you will frustrate a percentage of people, but others will get off the couch and go buy the vinyl at the store.”

We question it too, Jack. Oh wait, no we don’t because we just read that quote on the internet. The internet also told us that the Dead Weather is playing on old-timey television on Conan O’Brien’s program The Tonight Show tomorrow night. The internet also puts millions of pictures of adorable kittens at our fingertips. And it allows us to talk to grammy through live video. So does the Dead Weather need a MySpace page? Maybe not. But the internet is definitely neat.

Brazilian psych legends Os Mutantes, who returned to the stage in 2006 for a handful of decidedly retro shows (see “A Minha Menina” in London above), are now coming back with their first new album in 35 years on September 8th through Anti- records, also home to everything from Porter Wagoner to Sage Francis to Antibalas and Man Man. Who knows what to expect from this band at this point, but with reported collaborations with awesome weirdo Tom Zé and smooth Tropicalian Jorge Ben on the album, entitled Haih, don’t be surprised if it’s the soundtrack to some indian summer sojourns.

Speaking of which, if you’re in San Francisco or Montreal in late August or early September, respectively, Os Mutantes will be playing Outside Lands and Pop Montreal.

Miles B.A. Robinson, who last year released his excellent if overlooked self-titled LP, recently moved to Portland from Brooklyn (a trend we’ve been noticing lately) to either clear his mind or muddy it further. His follow-up album, produced by TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone, is supposedly still coming out soon and will presumably increase his popularity among fans of his friends’ band Grizzly Bear, but since we have heard zero songs from that record, we’ll settle for a pair of songs he recorded in the UK recently while there playing the Stag & Dagger festival. One is a Thin Lizzy cover, the other is the never before heard “Gold and Grey.” Both are available here along with an extensive interview.

The trailer for Blood Into Wine, a documentary about Tool/Puscifer/A Perfect Circle singer Maynard James Keenan and his partner Eric Glomski’s attempt to bring the wine industry to Arizona’s Verde Valley, which includes chi-chi hub Sedona, just came to our attention, and we are now realizing that we have never seen Keenan talk this much. Then again, we haven’t really tried to see him talk this much.

The film, which is being co-directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke (the filmmakers behind documentaries Moog and The Heart Is A Drum Machine), is set to wrap production in September with a limited theatrical release in February and March 2010, and, for all those slavishly devoted Keenan fans out there, an accompanying soundtrack with original material from Keenan will accompany the release of the documentary with more details to be announced soon. Thank god, because the spaghetti western trip hop in this trailer actually makes us want to drink ourselves to sleep right now.

Feel the drama.

Ever since Wavves aka Nathan Williams had a little mental breakdown on the Pitchfork-curated stage at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona a few weeks ago, the music site has taken a not-so-subtle negative stance towards Williams whenever it sees an opportunity. It began with the actual news story of Wavves bad Primavera show, which Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber himself began with this little cat scratch directed at the Best New Music-earning band…

Over the past six months, the San Diego no-fi outfit Wavves has notoriously made a better bedroom project than live band.

… and finished with a suggestion that Williams and drummer Ryan Ulsh might kill each other before they even made it to Pitchfork’s own music festival on July 18th. The latter bit of blood lust has proven itself to be untrue with the passage of time, but the former seems an odd assertion considering Schreiber is presumably the one who booked (or approved the booking of) Wavves at both Primavera and the Pitchfork Festival. We’ve also seen Wavves several times in venues both large and small and he’s never failed to be pretty awesome, if not more accessible than he is on record.

So what are we to make of Pitchfork’s recent Wavves-bashing editorial direction, which culminated today in a post that quotes Black Lips’ Jared Swilley talking wildly about Williams in a Norwegian radio interview, crescendos (yeah, blog posts crescendo) with “it should be noted that this is not the first time a band has talked shit about Wavves” (yes, clearly should be noted) and mentions both bands will be at Pitchfork’s festival and ends with “Feel the drama!” (really?)?

We’d like to hear what you think in the comments section. Has Wavves one bad show earned the ire of music’s biggest critic? Is Pitchfork just trying to pump up its festival’s ticket sales? Or is Pitchfork just being a dick? Let’s hear it.

Larry Clark, the man behind parent-hated art since 1971’s Tulsa, is remaking the Neil Jordan’s 1986 Bob Hoskins gangster vehicle Mona Lisa. He’s already tapped tenacious Mickey Rourke for the Hoskins role, and Rourke is now openly lobbying for Mick Jagger to play Mortwell, originally thespianized by Michael Caine. It’s nearly impossible to imagine how incredible this remake would be, but we would like to already suggest, regardless of box office receipts, that the Rourke-Jagger duo next tackle a reinvention of another Caine film: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Who wouldn’t want to see Mick Jagger poke himself in the eye with a cork?

After years and years of trying to convince the world that they were better than not only the Beatles but anyone whose ever even looked at or thought about a musical instrument, Oasis has enlisted the Hairy Fairy, aka Devendra Banhart, to remix the next single from the band’s new album Dig Out Your Soul. He chose jug band burner “Get Off Your High Horse Lady,” which you have to register at the Oasis community to actually hear. We did that and still couldn’t, so we’re going to just repost what the Oasis fans had to say about it on the message board…

bharper
Haha its quite good!

vashuclash
weird and equally piontless

snazzmaster
doesnt work for me

bergkamp2004
doesnt play

brightmeister
bad song to remix tbh, not bad tho, still as awful as the original song

dudacough
not workin for me

MasterNova
I prefer album version. Of course with it’s Indian theme, it feels very Jamaican to me. Anyone else? That strumming acoustic in the background really sets a tone different than the other ‘Techno’ bits that are usually inter-laced in remixes.

- All in all this sounds like a completely different song, which I gather it is supposed to. A little low key and monotoninous for me though. Also, I guess due to popularity of it right now, can’t access whole version and it is pretty laggy.

.Rubber.Soul.
Why remix this song?

It would be like painting a turd purple. Pointless and stinky.

shakermakerman
its crap

speller
it doesnt work

dudacough
ok it’s working now for me.

rather cool actually. Nice twist to it.
Still prefer the album version, but it’s still a good remix.

bigbri1973
it’s ok, very chilled.

fatbobslim
Not playing for me either… grrr.

soldier~on
Cool but i still like the album version better

Brooklyn indie rock overachievers bring home another A+.

Grizzly Bear
Veckatimest
Warp
Release Date: 5.19.09
Damn overachievers. Grizzly Bear are those kids whose parents never let them watch television or drink Coke, the ones who had their homework finished right as they got off the bus and still had time for their Suzuki violin lessons before dinner. The walls of their bedrooms are lined with blue ribbons, award certificates and any matter of plaques and medals, but no one would ever know it, because no one’s ever been invited over. They’re the quiet kids who stay to themselves, reveling in their reserved genius and leaving the rest of us to wonder just what exactly goes on inside those heads. Veckatimest is their latest A+, another flawless, carefully executed effort to hang on the fridge.

The bombast employed on this collection provides a heady compliment to the relative airiness of 2006’s Yellow House. The guitars have gotten fuzzier, the drums are a vivid cannon, and the vocals soar just close enough to the sun to allow the boys to stay adrift on their harmonies. The chunky bottom end of “Cheerleader” is brilliantly offset by the ethereal Brooklyn Youth Chorus, who appear on three of the album’s tracks. The Gershwin-aping “I Live With You” is cushioned by lush strings and horns, an honest-to-goodness rhapsody in Brooklyn. Ed Droste’s vocals are as pristine as ever, but Daniel Rossen gets to shine a bit on “Fine For Now” – you follow him down to every syllable of the raspy “we’re all fal-ter-ing.” And though the record slows here and there, the whole set feels complete and is easy to get lost in. It’ll take several listens to pick out every calculated detail, but since Veckatimest is an infinitely repeatable affair, it shouldn’t be that unpleasant a task.

—Joseph Tirabassi

Poor Bret Michaels. From what we hear, he’s had it pretty rough since around 1991-92. And by rough we mean he’s been able to basically live the exact same lifestyle he did when he was mixing it up with CC and the boys during the salad days of Poison. How did he manage it? By taking it on the chin and getting back up, never giving up and never giving in. And wearing sweet hats. So while most people are laughing at Michaels this morning, after he got Wile E. Coyote’d by the glimmering backdrop at the Tony Awards last night, we are laughing with him (hopefully he’s laughing) because we get the feeling he will probably turn this into an opportunity to score with some haggard babes and make a little money. Don’t need nothing! But a GOOD ACCIDENTAL INJURY SETTLEMENT AND SOME SYMPATHY SEX! Don’t get bettah than this!!

Years before they became rich and famous rock stars, Ratatat made a couple of mixtapes that took verses from some of their favorite rap anthems and laid them over ‘Tat original productions. Fans of those tapes always hoped someone in the record industry would ask them to make a beat on a legitimate rap album, and that day has finally come. Rising Kanye West protegé Kid Cudi just released the video for “Heaven At Nite,” his follow-up to megajam “Day N Nite,” and the song is vintage Ratatat. Congrats, boys!
