New Music Thursdays – Deastro

Like many artists and bands who seem to spring up overnight, Detroit’s pop maestro Deastro definitely didn’t start making music yesterday. In fact, the 22-year-old has been recording his own albums for a decade before he hooked up with Ghostly International to release his informal best-of album, Keepers, and — along with his newly formed band — start work on his first full-length LP, Moondagger.

His name away from studio and stage is Randolph Chabot, and his songs are like tiny digital pop symphonies. Like a synth-pop Phil Spector, he creates walls of sound, layer upon layer of melody and texture supporting his lilting, airy vocal. “Parallelogram,” the first single from Moondagger, was released last month as a 7″ single with the track “Carol Gilligan” on the B side and is a perfect taste of Deastro, with quickly sung verses and a supporting harmony that sounds almost Cure-esque, moving into that thick texture of sound in the chorus.

No word yet on when Moondagger will be out in its entirety. The Detroit boy will be playing venues around Michigan through February, but should be heading south to Texas in March for SXSW. If you’re curious to hear more, head to Deastro’s MySpace for more tracks, and check out “Michael, The Lone Archer of the North Shore,” from Keepers, below.
