Not sure I buy what you’re saying about Prince’s lyrical abilities, although maybe I’m misinterpreting. I think he’s quite gifted at creating stories that work well with his certainly prodigious musical gifts- “1999,” “Darling Nikki,” “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and the one that you noted, “Raspberry Beret,” just to name a few. I’d agree that his musicianship surpasses his writing, but I still think he writes good stuff.
