Video Interview – Ane Brun

The Norwegian-by-way-of-Sweden marvel Ane Brun made a stop in our lovely burough, bringing her sweet soulful voice and acoustic guitar for a few intimate shows. Dubbed (by the American media, mind you) the Swedish Dolly Parton (despite being Norwegian), Ane brings a power to her songs through her voice while displaying a seemingly effortless ability to craft indelible — and often times jarring and despairing — personal songs of intimacy.

The term singer/songwriter could not pertain to a more appropriate subject. Self-taught on the guitar, Brun wields a passion similar and often compared to Ani DiFranco, with a humble aura of cool that could also measure up to the Buffalo, NY composer. Considering this is a woman who has won Grammy awards in her home country of Norway, been nominated in Sweden, has played stadiums throughout Europe and whose current single “True Colors” resides at number 5 on the Swedish singles charts between Coldplay, T.I., Beyonce and Katy Perry, it makes her that much more respectable when she plays cozy venues like those she played here in the States with such grace, charm and noticeable enthusiasm.

Riding the wave of critical and international acclaim for her latest full length, Changing Of The Season, Ane was kind enough to speak with us before one of her solo shows at Brooklyn’s Union Hall. Just as charming in person as she is on stage, we talked about the Dolly Parton reference, her performance with A-ha and the brewing rivalry between Sweden and Norway for the rights to her cultural heritage. Purposely framed in the shot, try not to let the creepy face behind Ane distract you. [see Ane perform "My Lover Will Go" live here]

I caught Ane on her last tour here. She was fantastic. So was the other swedish artist Theresa Andersson. Theresa is easily the most musical “looper” i have ever seen. Just incredible.
