Company Of Thieves @ Bowery Ballroom | NYC

Company Of Thieves

Contributing photographer Meg Clark made her way out to Bowery Ballroom to see the quirky Genevieve Schatz and the rest of the Company of Thieves. The charming and “literary” young Chicago band was very happy to be back in New York City and Meg caught it all for us. Here is what she saw.

    Very good live show.

The songs are so well written and so “wide open” that each member has room to flex and “catch fire” at will contributing to a unique live performance. Genevieve’s voice gives you chills. The rhythm section is punchy and contrasts nicely with Marc’s solid licks and sweeping yet ethereal guitar work. I spoke to them and can say.. there is really nothing holding them back. Their bold approach to the business (work ethic and overall attention to dteail) and the fact that they write together constantly (either on an Mbox | protools or otherwise) is looking to pay off as these folks are VERY talented. Ordinary Riches is a great debut, so go cop it, and I would have to say that seeing and meeting this crew was a much richer experience. Try to see them.

    JC,

Fuck dude..are you me, but in the future? Which is to say, I have a lot of similar things to say about the band..just went to their show at Headliners in Louisville, Ky. To put the singer in a simple box, one could say she’s an American Bjork (both visually and in terms of audio-range), but you’d have to take the box and ram it to hell with a dirty hot jack-pin. I mean..seeing as every instrumental element of the band was hitting not only the proper notes in their proper time, but also the notes you DIDN’T see coming…a feat of loving novelty in itself. But the singer..god damn her..hot mercury..the most amazing instrument..the word dance maybe implies that there was some plan, forethought or preconceived pattern to her motion. Not even..she just WAS that thing, opened up and threw herself, just like the rest of the band..banged it out. Clean. So genuine. All of them. I’ve been to plenty of shows over 15 years, been boozed and/or had some interesting drugs on many of those interesting occasions, leading to a variety of splendid kinds of satisfaction on a variety of levels…but stone sober this was maybe the most moving show I’ve ever been to. Folks, you need to go see this band.
