Courtney Love Gives Moulin Rouge Green Light For Nirvana Track

Baz Lurhmann, the creative brain behind last year’s “Sunscreen” song, was forced to beg Courtney Love to allow him use of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in his new movie. Luhrmann, whose biggest hit came when he directed Romeo and Juliet in 1995 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Luhrmann’s next project “Moulin Rouge” is a period piece which stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor and revolves around the 19th Century Parisian night club. Love was convinced that the music of her dead husband Kurt Cobain wasn’t appropriate for the period piece, Moulin Rouge (2001) – which also stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, and revolves around the 19th Century Parisian night club.

Luhrmann says, “I had to spend time with Courtney Love going through that in a very thorough way. You can imagine Teen Spirit is an ironic piece, a symbol for a generation and Courtney really protects it. At first she was like, In a musical? I don’t think so!’ And then I sent her the footage with that lyric, ‘Here we are now, entertain us,’ and she recognised the song is being sung by guys in top hats and tails and it’s this wild out of control vision of the 1890s. The juxtaposition made it special enough for her to give us permission to use it.”

The story follows a poet (McGregor) who defies his father by
moving to Monmarte, France, the 19th century equivalent of
Andy Warhol’s Factory. He falls into the world of
Toulouse-Lautrec (Leguizamo) and his entourage, and is drafted
to write a nightclub spectacular. In this seedy world of sex, drugs
and electricity, he begins a passionate but ultimately doomed
love affair with the club’s highest paid star and courtesan
(Kidman). In stores in June of 2001.
