“I Get MY Beat” – at Bowery Ballroom

What do you talk about first? How talented a songwriter Richard Ashcroft is? How talented a performer he is? What a great visually entertaining show he puts on? How underrated an artist he is? You must address all these things especially after attending the gig last night (1/29/01) at Bowery Ballroom in New York City. From the crashing acoustic notes of “Sonnet” to the gorgeous melodic twists of “The Drugs Don’t Work” and “A Song For The Lovers,” Ashcroft’s vocals were so fresh and thick with emotion. He sounded incredible!

The visual backdrops of images and lyrics were simultaneously moving as were the instruments on each song. A wonderful highlight was Ashcroft trading guitar riffs with the flute player on “I Get My Beat” as the backdrop flashed with a gorgeous sky and bright white clouds. It was simply stunning.
Folks the set list was flawless, covering the hits from Urban Hymns, and Alone With Everybody. “Space and Time” was shining, “C’mon People (We’re Making It Now)” was inspiring, the list goes on.

If you’re doubting his injury, a fan screamed , “How are the ribs?” Richard pulled up his shirt and said, “You see the scar?” Bottom line, this is one of the greatest songwriter/musicians out there. Give this guy the credit he deserves! Footnote ? do not bring a digital camera to the BOWERY BALLROOM in ? there is a cock there waiting to collect your disc, hence no live photo to file.
