Thursday Express ñ Legal Woes for Courtney Love, Black Crowes

Hole singer Courtney Love (aka C.Lo) has filed suit against Universal Music Group, alleging that the label violated a California law that allows contracts between artists and entertainment companies to be severed after seven years, her lawyer announced yesterday. The cross-complaint is in reaction to a breach-of-contract suit that Universal-owned Geffen Records filed against Love and bandmate Eric Erlandson in January 2000. Universal’s suit maintains that Love and Erlandson owe the company five more albums. Hole is attempting to leave the label, citing the so-called “seven-year statute.”

The Black Crowes are also mad, but they wanna see the money too. The band have filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against international insurance company Lloyds of London for breach of contract and bad faith.
The suit stems from the cancellation of dates on the Crowes’ US tour with ex-Led Zeppeliner Jimmy Page last year, and the Southern rockers allege that Lloyds have refused to honor an agreement which would have compensated the artists for loss of profits. They are seeking punitive and compensatory damages.
