Australia’s own The Living End came through NYC’s Bowery Ballroom last night (3/19) to get the kids rockin’ and get the kids rockin’ they definitely did. And anyone concerned that the band can sound somewhat like Green Day should just shut the hell up and get with these three guys that clearly have real talent, they know their instruments and can write some damn fine pop tunes. Plus, does anyone in Green Day play double bass? No, so there.
After a fairly non-descript set by American Hi-Fi, the Aussie trio came out and wrestled everyone’s attention with the opener “Save the Day” and then the new single off their forthcoming album of the same name, “Roll On.” That got the teens down front who were desperate for a good mosh-pit going and while I’m thinking of it, I really must tip my hat to the wee pig-tailed lass who held her own in that pit ‘o testosterone cheers to you. Anyway, the band punched through several songs off both their self-titled album, and their new release (coming out 3/27), before hitting the highlight of the show an amazing cover version of the U2 classic, “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” The last third of the show was flawless and they ended it with “Prisoner,” the single off their self-titled effort. Go out and see these kids while they’re on this side of the Atlantic.
