What do you get when you combine extreme sports and music awards? Well, metal of
course! The first annual ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards were held this weekend and
old skool metallers Metallica came away with the Artist Contribution Award for
“raising the enjoyment of action sports”, not to mention “bumrushing headz on Napster.”
Oh wait, that was something else. Other winners on Saturday at the Universal Amphitheatre
were nu skool metal heads Deftones who won the Artist of the Year award as voted
by BMX riders, as well as more varied acts such as Moby, Eminem,
NOFX and Linkin Park, amongst others.
The official award winners were as follows:
Metallica – Artist Contribution Award
NOFX – Music Artist of the Year, snowboarding
Eminem – Music Artist of the Year, skateboarding
Linkin Park – Music Artist of the Year, Motocross riding
Jack Johnson – Music Artist of the Year, surfing
Moby – Music Artist of the Year, skiing
Deftones – Music Artist of the Year, BMX riding
One time reigning world rock and roll champs U2 are obviously back on the way to
the top and are looking for ways to further their cause. One way they have decided to get
their music out to the kids is on the soundtrack of the upcoming Tomb Raider movie,
starring Angelina Jolie as videogame heroine and boob job queen Lara
Croft. Jolie will actually feature in the video for the U2 soundtrack
contribution, “Elevation.” In the video, the band need Croft’s help in saving The
Edge from an evil Bizarro world style U2. Too bad they couldn’t have gotten
her help in saving The Edge from his hair in the late ’80s.
