White Stripes Just Say No To The GAP

Detroit sibling minimalists, the White Stripes, have reportedly turned down an appearance in a GAP advertisement worth an estimated $1 million. The Stripes, who have just signed a deal with XL rumored to be worth up to $1 million, were approached by the clothing giant to take part in the GAPís latest television campaign, which includes the likes of Daft Punk, Tricky and Duran Duran. Vocalist Jack White apparently made the decision in an effort to defend against accusations that the band had “sold out” by signing such a large recording contract. He said, “The GAP wanted us to be in a commercial and we said ‘no’ and everyone said, ‘why not’? It’s almost as if, if people are willing to give you that much money, you are insulting everyone you know by turning it down. People’s opinions about selling out seem to have changed over the years.”
