Phantom Planet will release their sophomore album, The Guest, on February 26, 2002. The Los Angeles based quintet opened for Remy Zero and Pete Yorn last evening, and although they resemble the same curb dogs who spend all day and night loitering in front of 7-11, these kids are potential stars. The band’s drummer Jason Schwartzman, who starred as Max Fisher in the Wes Anderson vehicle Rushmore, really shows promise as he whaled away on that kit as if it were an ex-girlfriend. Schwartzman has put on a few pounds since the unforgettable movie of which he is known for, but who cares, the show was rad. Singer Alex Greenwald drives the get a long gang down a road similar to early Radiohead, dominating the stage with his ear piercing voice and engaging young stature. The crowd was really into the set too, which was odd since the Planet were just added the day of the show, I assumed that most ticketholders had no clue of who these children even were. The band’s first single, “California”, hits you like a shot of Jeagermeister as it waits, waits, finally slamming your brain rendering it senseless. I donít have an advance of the new record (*wink*) but believe that “Guest” and “Nobodyís Fault” were also among the super cool songs played. Look for Phantom Planet to consume Earth in 2002, they got the touch, they got the power.
