Mike Dís New Power Project Energizing Public Opinion

In the ongoing battle for the preservation of our worldís (or more accurately, our countryís) natural resources, a new organization is leading the charge. Formed by Beastie Boy Mike D, the New Power Project is a star-studded pro-environmental organization formed to help counter President George W. Bushís plan to begin drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other public lands. Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson, R.E.M. and Live are the most recent additions to the organization, which already includes the Beastie Boys, Barenaked Ladies, Moby, Tom Petty, Alanis Morissette, Jackson Browne and more of today and yesterdayís biggest stars. According to Launch.com, the goal of the New Power Project is to energize public opinion against Bushís plan by way of artist websites, petitions, and concert events.

An alternative bill, proposed by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, would prohibit drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and would instead invest in clean forms of energy and raise fuel efficiency standards. These steps would help to ease Americaís dependency on foreign oil, which is also Bushís goal, but would protect our countyís beautiful natural resources instead of destroying them. If you are interested in supporting this alternative bill, head over to saveourenvironment.org, where a free fax can be sent to your local Senator stating your position on the issue.
