Dave Pirner Takes A Runaway Train Down The Solo Tracks

Dave Pirner, the mouthpiece for Soul Asylum and umpteenth notch on the headboard of reputed thief Winona Ryder, will release his first solo album on July 16 on Ultimatum Music. The singer recently moved from his hometown of Minneapolis to the putrid smelling city of New Orleans. The 11-track disc is highly inspired by the move, and is said to have a strong R&B, jazz, and funk aroma to it. Pirner self-produced the untitled debut at New Orleans’ famed Kingsway Studios, which features keyboardist Billy Preston (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones) and guitarist Chris Whitley. Despite the focus on the solo career, Soul Asylum have not disbanded. In fact the band, whose Grave Dancerís Union sold 2.1 million copies in 1992, will play a number of shows this summer.
