Live – Beck Brings Aural Ecstasy To LA

It was billed as “An Evening With Beck,” and the lucky few in
Brentwood’s Wadsworth Theater on Friday night we’re treated to that and more. In anticipation of his forthcoming Geffen release Sea Change (09.24.02), Beck played a limited number of acoustic dates and finished the mini tour in his hometown this past Friday night. What started out as a one man show ended in an acoustic jam with the members of his longtime band – Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. on keyboards, Joey Waronker on drums and a Smokey Hormel on guitar. The result was musical bliss. Drawing mostly from the new album and 1998’s Mutations, the quintet created a smorgasbord of harmonies and melodies and, for over two hours, had the crowd enraptured.

And Beck, the showman that he is, peppered the evening with his honkabilly wit — talking of the days “in the early nineties” when he was a student at the “Folksingers Institute of Technology.” But, jokes aside, this night was all about the music. Sea Change, although without any clear radio-friendly hit, is a musical masterpiece and proves that Beck continues to grow as an artist.

Odds are that Beck and the boys will be back out on the road to support the new release — this is a show that you won’t want to miss.
