Live – Brendan Benson and the Wellfed Boys at the Northsix

Brendan Benson’s Lapalco is one of the more overlooked indie-pop records from the past year. After being dropped by Virgin, the Jack White-adored Detroit native signed with ultra-hip Brooklyn label, StarTime International. Lapalco is chock full catchy tunes and simple endearing lyrics. Taking his rock show on the road, the Brooklyn stop proved to be superb.

The haggard child-looking Benson got things started off right with “Good To Me” – a tune about the happiness with the shortcomings in his life from his 1980 Volvo to his girlfriend that “will always be true to him.” The set stayed upbeat and tight throughout thanks to the Wellfed Boys. This was no hired backup band, but rather a scruffy collection wily veterans who helped fill out Brendan’s sounds. With the help of backup vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Wellfed Boy, the vocals and harmonies so perfectly recorded on Lapalco were able to come alive. The cool Brooklyn/Manhattan crowd appreciated every hook and riff that Brendan and the boys belted out and made for a perfect start to the weekend!
