Live – The Foo Fighters Fucking Rock!

Last Saturday night, Dave Grohl and company treated their Chicagoland fans to one hell of a rock & roll show. The intimate Metro was filled to capacity with screaming die-hard Foo fans, and by the time I arrived (shortly after 8 PM), finding a decent spot on the floor was quite a challenge. As I settled in against the far right wall and found a handy little place to rest my beer, the Foos emerged and erupted into “All My Life” without saying a word. Needless to say, the place went nuts: we’re talking all-out pandemonium.

Grohl led the band through three or four straight tunes before he took a time out to address the crowd. He has a commanding, larger than life, stage presence, but for someone with his stellar track record, that is no surprise. Grohl chatted with the crowd on numerous occasions, and his sense of humor shown through with each comment. He said, “we’re going to play a bunch of new songs, but we’ll play some old ones too. You know, because we have so many fucking hits?” And later, he told the crowd about how the band had scratched the entire album after months of work and re-recorded the whole thing in his Virginia home, reasoning that the album sounded “too good” the first time around.

Whether it’s his sense of humor, his stage presence, or his straight up talent, every girl I talked to in the entire club (and pretty much all over the world) referred to Grohl as “my boyfriend” (you know who you are). Well, boyfriend to the masses or not, Dave Grohl and his fellow Foos scored a massive success with this “intimate club tour,” as he put it. The mission was to get in touch with the people and they did exactly that. Grohl even came into the crowd and actually “touched” the people with his own hands.

I’ve yet to hear the new album, but “Overdrive” and “Times Like These” absolutely rocked my socks off when I heard them performed live. Old favorites like “Monkey Wrench” and “My Hero” did the same, and prompted me to dust off my old Colour And The Shape CD for the ride home.

It is clear that the Foo Fighters are at the top of their game, just ask anyone who was lucky enough to land a ticket to this event. Seriously, call in favors, beg, borrow or steal for some tickets to this tour. It will be worth it.
