Oakenfold Brings Band, Virtual Vocalists On Winter Tour

Groundbreaking producer/remixer/artist/DJ Paul Oakenfold is proving that he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. On November 25, the DJ will embark on a 16-date North American tour in support of his first proper album, Bunkka, but he’s doing things a little differently this time around. Oakenfold will spend the first hour of each show at the decks, but will take to the keyboards for the second hour along with a star-studded backing band made up of John Tonks, who hits the skins for Tricky on drums and Tim Hutton of Groove Armada on guitar and bass. Those who know the album may be wondering if the multitude of special guest vocalists (Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Grant Lee Phillips, etc.) will also be along for the ride. Well, kind of.

According to Rolling Stone, along with the live band, the show will feature pre-recorded footage of some of the singers performing their tracks. “I just wanted to do something that was kind of pushing the boundaries,” Oakenfold said. The footage will be shown on 30-foot screen set up behind the trio during the second half of the performance.

In other Oakenfold news, the star was tapped to bring “The James Bond Theme” into the 21st century for the new 007 movie, Die Another Day. “I put breakbeats on the drums, and we added our own guitar lines,” he says. “It was probably the hardest mix I’ve ever done because it’s so familiar and to try to get away from that familiarity is really difficult. You needed to know it was ‘Bond’ and you needed to know it was a cutting edge version you’d never heard before. It’s ‘Bond,’ but completely different.”
