Stereolab’s Mary Hansen Killed In Bicycle Accident

The indie world has been shocked with the passing of Stereolab guitarist Mary Hansen. The 36-year old musician was killed over the weekend while riding her bicycle in London. Hansen had been with the band for over 10 years and provided the backing vocals for frontwoman Laetitia Sadier to float her wondrous murmurings over. Perhaps best known for their track “Ping Pong” off Mars Audiac Quintet, as well as being known for being highly prolific, releasing more than an album a year during the early and mid ’90s, Stereolab mixed Moogs with French and English vocals and angular guitar lines to produce a sound completely their own. With a strong underground following the band continued throughout the ’90s releasing further albums and many rare, handpainted, and therefore highly collectible, vinyl releases . There is no word as to the band’s plans, but we send our best wishes to all affected by this tragedy.
