April 8 Marks The Summer Of The Shark For Portastatic

Merge Records brainchild and Superchunk focal point Mac McCaughan will release a new album under the solo shroud of Portastatic in April. Merge will release The Summer of the Shark on April 8, and Mac has made two tracks into audio appetizers for you to dine on while waiting for the real thing (“Chesapeake” and “Noisy Night”). McCaughan wrote, performed, and recorded the album in his home, as Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss, Lambchop’s Tony Crow, and others stopped by for some Kool-Aid and to help arrange some tunes. Aside from a number of CD EPs and a score of the film Looking for Leonard, The Summer of the Shark is the first proper Portastatic CD in six years following 1997’s The Nature of Sap. Pitchfork Media reports that Mac (with brother Matthew and bassist Aaron) will open for Yo La Tengo on their tour this spring which sounds like free cupcakes and sugar pies to our ears…whatever the hell that means.
