The new Apple Computer digital music distribution service, iTunes Music Store, has been deemed an overwhelming success, says Billboard. An estimated 275,000 tracks, each sold at 99 cents a pop, were downloaded within the first 18 hours of service’s launch. Considering that the service is only available to Apple’s limited user base, it’s off to quite an incredible start. The next obvious question is who will be the first to create a similar service for PC users (the overwhelming majority of all computer users)? If another company wants to make a run at it, they better hurry, as Apple has already signed wholesale agreements with two major labels for a PC-compatible version of the iTunes Music Store. Apple plans to have that PC-compatible version of iTunes by the end of the year.
