It wasnít quite getting to Glastonbury, but, seeing as the weather was somewhat suspect, with rain as prevalent as sunshine, watching the highlights on TV was a close second. Well, maybe not that close, but I still got to see some rather nice performances. The BBC coverage was relatively varied, but a good chunk of the bands I wanted to see were at least covered for a bit. There was Doves excellent renditions of ìThe Last Broadcastî and ìPoundingî and Electric Six electrifying the crowd with their dual top-5 chart smashes ìGay Barî and ìDanger! High Voltage.î ìGoreckiî by Lamb was spine-tingling and Junior Seniorís intimate stripped-down BBC-special performance of ìMove Your Feetî stressed the inherent quality in that disco jamboree. Friday night’s headliners were REM and their set of new and old and rarely heard gems proved once and for all that they had not lost a bit of skill and that they would be back on the attack this year.
The stars of the weekend, however, were Radiohead as hit after hit was unleashed on the thirsty crowd, the amassed throng taking in the songs and singing them back in kind. ìJust,î ìParanoid Android,î ìIdioteque,î and ìFake Plastic Treesî were all resplendent, but the nightís closer of ìStreet Spiritî cemented the bandís status as The Best Live Act On The Planet. Two other highlights of the weekend were Radiohead related, as well, as the ë80s cockrock explosion that is The Darkness opened the weekendís festivities with a set that included their cover of ìStreet Spiritî and the final act of the weekend, a rejuvinated Moby closed out the wondrous weekend festival with an awe-inspiring version of the íHeadís ìCreep.î Purely amazing. Gotta find my way to the Reading Festival this year, though. Canít be left on the couch twice in one summerÖ
