UK darlings the Super Furry Animals will drop their latest masterpiece, Phantom Power, tomorrow (July 22) via our pals at Beggars Group/XL Recordings. The Welsh quintet recorded the album during the second half of 2002 with engineering help from long-time collaborator Gorwel Owen and Tony Dougan. “A lot of the album was shaped in our own studio late at night in an office block in Cardiff,” says the band. “We’d erect tents in the corridors at nights to record acoustic guitars and we’d have to take them all down in the morning before our neighbours came to work.” A Phantom Power DVD will also be released, but fans will have to wait until September 9 to get their hands on it in the US.
A series of record release parties are scheduled to celebrate the arrival of the band’s new album. NYC fans are invited to Fringe Benefits @ Serena Bar (under the Chelsea Hotel) TONIGHT from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. Parties in Sacramento and Washington, DC are also scheduled for July 22 and July 25 respectively.
Super Furry Animals have also booked a co-headlining US tour with Grandaddy to support Phantom Power. The 13-date trek will kick off on September 18 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA, and run through a two-night stand at NYC’s Irving Plaza on October 3 and 4. Grandaddy will be supporting their latest effort, Sumday, which was released May 13 via V2. See below for all the details.
