Live – Some Girls Offer Rock Music To Sooth Hurricane Headaches

It’s hard to imagine a better way to end a week in the Nation’s capital, which had its full share of Hurricane Isabel drama, than with the angelic indie janglings of Juliana Hatfield and her new band, Some Girls. On their first proper tour, the threesome, featuring JH, Freda Love, from Juliana’s first band, the Blake Babies, on drums and Heidi Gluck, from Indianapolis’ The Pieces, on bass, mark another journey in Juliana’s career, now in its third decade.

Looking better than ever, perhaps coming from J. Crew’s runway at last weeks’ Fashion Week in NYC (does J. Crew do fashion week?), ?Juliana and her rhythm section graced Arlington’s Iota Cafe for an hour-plus set. The girls played over a dozen songs mainly consisting of Some Girls debut record Feel It numbers. Those in the audience seemed entranced by the new material with the biggest reaction to Some Girls’ first single, “Necessito,” the positive feedback produced several smiles by Juliana.?The set was nearly absent of material from Juliana’s past work, until they let loose with the Blake Babies’ “Nothing Ever Happens.” The set concluded with Feel It’s “Just Like The First Time,” featuring Heidi on a lap steel guitar.

For an encore, the three came back out for an indie-fied version of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart,” a cover found on Juliana’s Gold Stars (best of) CD. The band continues on tour through mid-October, with Heidi Gluck’s band coming on board as the opener starting in October.
