Major Music Merger: Sony Music + BMG = Sony Music BMG

We all heard the rumblings, we knew it was the in pipeline and it was only a matter of time. And so it has happened, two major music companies have merged. But itís not Warners and EMI. Itís Sony Music and BMG. The Japanese and German supercompany have inked a deal to merge. The new entity will be a 50-50 operation called Sony BMG and only is a merger of the music departments. The distribution, publishing, and CD manufacturing arms are staying separate at this time. Sony Music CEO Andrew Lack released a memo to employees that read in part, “While we are optimistic that a partnership between Sony Music and BMG would provide significant opportunities to both companies ñ and invigorate the music marketplace overall ñ you should keep in mind that we are at the very beginning of this process, and that we still have to secure approvals from regulatory bodies in both Washington, DC and the European Union.” Look for the merger to be complete around the beginning of the New Year. Of course, stay tuned for further info.
