It may be skin freezing cold in most places, but that shouldn’t stop us from thinking about some sweet summer fun, and that sweet summer fun I’m talking about is the third annual Bonnaroo Music Festival. Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment have announced the dates for this year’s three-day camping, music and art festival. OK, folks, get your calendars out, because here are the datesÖ 2004’s Bonnaroo will be taking place June 11-13, just 60 miles southeast of Nashville on the same picturesque, 600-acre farm in Manchester, TN as years past. The announcement of the 2004 dates have festival organizers working to make this Bonnaroo another unique and exciting event without deviating from the core concepts that have made Bonnaroo shine above all other modern music festivals. Superfly’s Jonathan Mayers says that “Artists and fans have made Bonnaroo a very special event and we are going to continue to provide the right elements to produce a music experience of the highest quality.”
Although a line-up has yet to be released, fans can expect a wide range of performers to grace the stage. Since its inception in June of 2002, Bonnaroo has been growing and changing to become more than just a culmination of grass roots rock artists. Bonnaroo 2003 saw such diverse acts as Neil Young, Sonic Youth, The Polyphonic Spree, The Dead, and Liz Phair. Rolling Stone called the second annual festival “the festival to end all festivals.” Bonnaroo has become a Mecca of creativity and culture, characterized by everything from cutting edge DJs and hip-hop artists to gospel music and indie rock to roots rock gods like The Dead and The Allman Brothers Band. And if the superb music line-up wasn’t enough, Bonnaroo also included plenty of other attractions to keep festival goers occupied, including artist interviews and workshops, a sonic village, a brewer’s festival tent, and a 24-hour cinema tent. Bonnaroo has also been a place to showcase artwork by some of the most cutting edge artists around.
Bonnaroo has become quite a success with its 2002 and 2003 festivals selling 70,000 to 80,000 tickets respectively in a matter of days, sans traditional advertising and without the announcement of the entire lineup. Bonnaroo has also spawned three volumes of live CDs and two DVD documentaries featuring live footage and artist, fan and staff interviews. With all this hype you’d be a fool to not go, and if further stimulation was necessary, you could go hit up Graceland: I hear it’s only 270 miles away.
