Mike Skinner, better known as the UK hip hop sensation The Streets, will release his second full length album on May 18 via Vice/Atlantic. The highly-anticipated follow-up to The Streets’ 2003 debut album, Original Pirate Material, has been dubbed A Grand Don’t Come For Free. As with his debut, the forthcoming release was completely written and produced by Skinner in his home. However, this time around his efforts have been focused to create an album that is centered around a full story that continues from track to track and even has two different endings. If that doesn’t sound cool enough, Coldplay’s Chris Martin offered up his services on the track “Dry Your Eyes,” which he wrote with Skinner.
The Streets’ debut album, Original Pirate Material, was one of the most celebrated records of 2003, winding up on numerous year-end lists. It was even Entertainment Weekly’s #1 album of the year and Rolling Stone’s #1 Debut of 2003. Look for a feature in the current issue of Rolling Stone. The Streets will play a few May dates in the UK, but as of yet there are no confirmed US tour dates. We’ll keep you posted.
