Last week we reported on a controversy surrounding a T-shirt carried by Urban Outfitters which read “Voting Is For Old People.” A number of youth voting organizations were a bit ticked off (to say the least) about this shirt. Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen, speaking on behalf of punkvoter.com even sent a letter to Urban Outfitters president Richard Hayne, calling for the T-shirt to be removed. A group of Harvard professors and hip-hop mastermind Russell Simmons also put pressure on Urban Outfitters to pull the T-shirt from their stores. Last Friday, the retailer gave in to the mounting pressure and arranged for the removal of the shirt. The company cited “continued misunderstanding surrounding the intended message” as the reason for the shirt’s removal.
T-shirt maker Vintage Vantage was the organization that created the shirt, and they find the whole thing a bit funny. Yale grad John Foster-Keddie, who heads up the company, told MTV News that the shirt was intended to be an ironic jab at “all of us who’ve been so apathetic in the past.”
Regardless of the shirt’s meaning, it’s clear that the political climate engulfing the impending presidential election is growing to tempest-like proportions. The future of our nation lays in the balance and it’s a no holds barred fight for every last vote.
