Adam Schlesinger Headed For Broadway

Fountains Of Wayne frontman Adam Schlesinger has penned songs for TV (Crank Yankers, SNL) and Film (That Thing You Do, Josie And The Pussycats), but he’s just signed on to bring his expertise to Broadway. Schlesinger will team up with lyricist and The Daily Show with John Stewart writer David Javerbaum to compose songs for a new musical. Called Cry-Baby and based on the 1990 John Waters film of the same name, the play takes place in 1954 Baltimore and is the classic tale of a good, rich girl who falls for the wrong, poor boy. According to Launch, Cry-Baby is due to premier on Broadway in 2006.

“What’s exciting about the period is it’s the birth of rock and roll, when rock was finding its feet.” Schlesinger told Playbill. “So the kind of stuff we’re referencing is classic formative rock — it can be innocent, suggestive and subversive.”

Fountains of Wayne kick of another US tour in support of 2003’s Welcome Interstate Managers on April 19 in Syracuse, NY.
