Having already conquered the rock world, ex-Pumpkin/ex-Zwan main man Billy Corgan has decided to hang up the guitar in order to pursue a career as a sportscaster. Like fellow-Chicagoan Michael Jordan, who hung up his Air Jordan’s for a pair of baseball cleats, Corgan is completely abandoning music in hopes to become the next anchor of Sports Center. Gotcha! Just kidding, but the guitar-wielding rocker HAS become Chicago heritage station WXRT’s official Cubs correspondent. Last Friday (May 21), Corgan joined the station’s morning show to do the first installment of The Wrigleyville Report. The new morning show feature will run throughout this year’s Major League Baseball season on Mondays and Fridays at 8:05a.m.
The relationship came about during last year’s Cubs playoff run, when ‘XRT VP of Programming Norm Winer first approached the star to do reports for the station. Corgan is an avid Cubs fan and travelled to all of last year’s playoff games at his own expense.
According to FMQB, Corgan will provide analysis of the previous week’s games and preview the upcoming week’s match-ups. “It’s not a monologue – it’s live and he’ll be talking to [morning show host] Lin Brehmer and they get along great!??We thought it was very ‘XRT-like to have Billy on to talk about?the?Cubs?from his perspective. He’s arguably the hippest Cubs fan in the world. Other than Lin.”
