Universal To Give Pocket CDs A Test Run In The UK

In an attempt to jumpstart sluggish CD sales, labels in Europe are testing a new format: the pocket CD. Initially tested in Germany last summer, Universal is now offering out the new technology in the UK on a trial basis, where pocket CDs for 16 Universal artists will be available, starting in July. The CDs, which are almost half the size of regular CDs, consist of both music and ring tone data. The discs can be played on computers, where the ring tones are downloaded to be placed on phones. Pricing has yet to be set, but it will be interesting to see whether this new technology can fire the CD single market back up or whether downloading has forever killed that format.
