R.E.M., Death Cab, Bright Eyes, More Donate Tracks To Political Comp.

They Might Be Giants principal John Flansburgh has organized a compilation CD to help raise money for political advocacy groups like MoveOn.org and other like-minded organizations. Titled Future Soundtrack For America, the CD features contributions from the likes of R.E.M., Blink-182, Fountains Of Wayne, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie, David Byrne, OK Go, Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am, They Might Be Giants and Elliott Smith. Seattle’s Barsuk Records will release the compilation on August 10 and according to label head Josh Rosenfeld, all proceeds will “go to progressive organizations including MoveOn.org, Music For America, Common Assets and others.”

“I basically had a very personal impulse,” Flansburgh told Billboard. “I’m essentially a private person. I enjoy the renown that the band has gotten and I like walking into a music store and people being nice to me, but beyond that, I pretty much don’t need to be any more famous.”

“But, as a citizen,” he continued, “I felt like we’re living in an extreme time and I feel I’m very nervous and unhappy with the state of the world and I wanted to do something other than just shake my fist at the TV.”

As soon as a finalized track listing is made available, we’ll give you the heads up.
