Pete Doherty Escapes Jail Sentence

Pete Doherty, the former Libertines frontman, today walked free after receiving a suspended four month sentence for possession of a 4in flick-knife as reported by the Guardian. Mr Doherty, 25, was found with the weapon by police who stopped him as he drove to his home in Rectory Square, Stepney, east London, in the early hours of June 18. At a hearing on August 17, the court heard that Mr Doherty claimed he had the knife in his possession on behalf of a friend, and had forgotten about it. The old “I’m holding it for a friend” rouse. Apparently it works!

Earlier in the day, swagger in hand, Mr Doherty arrived at court standing up through the sunroof of a Rover car playing a guitar with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. While he may have faced a custodial sentence of up to a year, the judge presiding at Thames Magistrates Court, gave the 25-year-old singer a suspended four month sentence.

Doherty, whose battle with drugs has seen him temporarily ejected from The Libertines, served two months of a six month prison sentence last September after raiding his ex-bandmate Carl Barat’s London flat and stealing an antique guitar, a VCR, a laptop, a mouth organ and a CD player. Doherty now has a new band, called Babyshambles.
