Green Day Considering Film Adaptation Of American Idiot

After a few years out of the spotlight, Green Day is proving that they are back with a vengeance. Their new record American Idiot is causing quite a buzz, which is evident by rocking the number one spot on this week’s Tripwire Chart. Billie Joe Armstrong is now considering the idea of turning their rock opera into a movie, following in the footsteps of The Who’s Tommy. Armstrong told MTV, “We’ve definitely been talking about someone writing a script for it, and there’s been a few different names that have been thrown at us. It sounds really exciting, but for right now it’s just talk.”

Although a film adaptation of their new record is still just an idea, a documentary may not be far off. John Roeker, the brains behind the animated “Life Freaky Die Freaky,” filmed Green Day’s recording sessions. The making of American Idiot was apparently filled with drama, including the theft of master tapes, plenty of bickering, and your typical punk rock hijinks. The band seems to be a bit hesitant in releasing a rockumentary. About this, Armstrong said, “I don’t want to back ourselves into a corner, because it seems like such a trend for people to do reality television meets music.” So for the time being, your only chance to see Green Day’s rock opera is to catch them on their current tour. First the tour, then the movie, then finally we get Green Day on ice. We can always dream.
