Frank Zappa + A Barn = New Supergrass

With the US release of Supergrass Is Ten tomorrow, you’d think that the lads from across the pond would be ready to take a break. The recording of “Kiss Of Life” and “Bullet” got their creative juices flowing, and are already preparing to work on their next record in France. Supergrass has already sketched out at least twenty songs, several of which will likely end up on the new album.

In an effort to capture the rawness of their rehearsals, Supergrass are to record in their own studio, which is still under construction. The location of this studio seems to be on a farm, using spaces ranging from barns to wells. Bassist Mickey Quinn told Billboard, “We’ve already found a well outside one of the barns, so we’ll make that into an echo chamber. I like the idea of making your own sounds and not sounding like you’ve come out of any particular studio. You’re treading virgin territory.” Rumors from the Supergrass camp include the possible completion of the new album by the beginning of 2005. As for the sound of the new tunes, Quinn says, “There’s one that’s like a cross between Frank Zappa and something very heavy, like Hawkwind. It will probably end up sounding really dainty when we get it onto the record, but who knows.”

Supergrass is kicking off a six-date mini-tour starting tomorrow.
