The Flaming Lips New Album Update

The Flaming Lips love keeping themselves busy, or they just have a bad case of ADD. The Oklahoma alt-noise-dream-psychedelic-pop magicians are still working on their Christmas movie, a new album, and a video for their SpongeBob SquarePants movie soundtrack contribution. Progress on their upcoming album is going slow but steady, with five or six songs still in the development stage. Frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard, “Some of this new stuff hints at more of a collage of classical, jazz, rock and folk, all sometimes happening within in the framework of the same song, but not a collection of cliched sounds. We just want to get a strange collection of moods.” The new album is tentatively titled At War With The Mystics, but that name could very well change by the time of its release sometime next year.

For fans of their mind-blowing album The Soft Bulletin, the Lips are beginning to remix the album in 5.1 Surround Sound. Pardon me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard. This re-release could contain up to eight songs that were not included on the original album. Coyne said, “For fans of that record, this is going to be a very cool item. I can talk about the songs and the making of them, and it will have these little psychedelic cartoons in the spirit of the album. The Soft Bulletin gave us such a different perspective and a new life — there’s a richness there that will be fun to go back and revisit.”
