Punk Scam Becomes Hollywood Movie

The fountain of youth scam which gave a veteran punk band their first hit for more than 20 years is to be turned into a Hollywood film. The Alarm had a UK top 30 hit earlier this year with 45rpm after pretending it was by a new band called The Poppyfields. They even went so far as to get young Welsh band The Wayriders to lip-synch the song for the video to convince DJs it was by a hip young band. Alarm frontman Mike Peters has now agreed to let lifelong friend Sara Sugarman direct the tale of how the band duped the music industry. It’s the brainchild of Shrek producer John Williams who contacted Peters and Sugarman without even knowing they were pals, reports the Daily Post.

As it were, Sugarman played in a band as a teenager and supported one of Peters’ early punk bands. Peters, 44, said: “I said to John Williams, I’ve got this old friend from home who works in movies out here now. I think she’d be great to direct it. When I said it was Sara, he couldn’t believe it. He’d already arranged a meeting for the next week to discuss the idea with her.”

The film will be a semi-fictional account of the story with The Alarm portrayed as a long-split 80s band who reunite for a Joe Strummer tribute concert before embarking on the scam.
