Everyone knows that The Vines have been notorious for less than stellar behavior. The legendary performance that was never aired on Jay Leno, the disaster of a performance on David Letterman in 2002, the crazy shows and stories from the road over the last few years. We all knew something was not 100% with Craig Nicholls, and now NME reveals all.
Singer Craig Nicholls has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a neurobiological disorder that causes the sufferer to exhibit autistic-like behavior. Social and communication skills are affected as well. People with Asperger Syndrome often have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. Nicholls was diagnosed after one of the band’s crewmembers alerted management to its existence, despite years of attempts by psychologists and psychiatrists to find the correct diagnosis.
According to NME, professionals have only recognized Asperger Syndrome for a few years and those diagnosed with the disorder are often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights. The person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. These neurological differences may cause odd or unusual behavior. Before diagnosis, those with the condition are sometimes thought of as eccentric, absent minded, socially inept or awkward physically.
The condition was revealed during a hearing at Sydney’s Balmain Local Court yesterday. Nicholls was facing charges of malicious damage and assault from an incident at the Annadale Hotel last May when he kicked a photographer’s camera during a show for Triple M radio. Charges were later dismissed.
Lesson here kids: if you have a medical team working day and night trying to figure out what is wrong, always seek a second opinion from a roadie. Usually they know what is up.
