Big Names Line Up For Junior Kimbrough Tribute Album

On January 17, Fat Possum will release Sunday Nights: The Songs Of Junior Kimbrough, a tribute album to the late great Mississippi delta bluesman. The album features 14 tracks by a number of big indie names and even a contribution from Iggy and The Stooges (with Mike Watt filling in for the late Dave Alexander). Some of the other artists who tried their hand at a Junior Kimbrough cover include Pete Yorn, The Black Keys, Spiritualized, Blues Explosion with Elliott Smith, Fiery Furnaces, Cat Power & Entrance, Mark Lanegan and The Ponys.

“Iggy Pop got Junior Kimbrough,” Fat Possum founder Matthew Johnson told Billboard. “He invited him to go on the road and open his 1996 tour. Despite being in his 60s and having to walk with the aid of a cane, Junior Kimbrough had no problem holding his own with Iggy. Junior, in addition to fathering 36 kids, had way more fun than you or I ever will. When Iggy learned about the project he called us to say he had to have ‘You Better Run.’”
