The Fire Theft Leave Rykodisc

The Fire Theft has decided to kick off 2005 with a clean slate. According to Billboard, the group have decided to part ways with Rykodisc, who released their debut album back in 2003. The band, which features several former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, have started early work on their sophomore release. About the new material, drummer William Goldsmith said: Some songs, the arrangements are definitely finished. Probably about five, but the rest are skeletons. Nothing has been recorded yet. We’ve just been doing rough demoing.”

The band is in no hurry to rush into the studio, and may not begin recording for a couple of more months. Frontman Jeremy Enigk’s current priority is the completion of his second Sub Pop solo release. The album will be the follow-up to 1996’s amazing “Return Of The Frog Queen.” Goldsmith commented, “the solo album is his priority right now. He’s planning on doing it all acoustic, kind of subdued. Not with big strings, which costs a lot of money.”

Goldsmith is also currently working on new instrumental project with Bill Dolan, who performed on the Fire Theft’s debut album. The release may be under the name 5ive Style, which could appear on Sub Pop. A joint tour with 5ive Style, the Fire Theft, and Enigk’s solo material very well could be a possibility. We will keep our fingers crossed.
