Like the saying goes, we all have our own idea of what beauty is but we all agree on ugly. Can this be applied to music at this time of festive year? New Jersey researchers Edison Media Research have named the six worst Christmas songs of all time, as picked by holiday-music fans who were asked to rate more than 600 yule tunes. What was atop the list? Gasp! I wonder what the median age of the pollsters was because “O Holy Night” by South Park’s Eric Cartman came out #1. What the fork? Cartman can do no wrong. The list, as it appeared in the NY Post, had Seymour Swine & the Squealers’ crap version of “Blue Christmas” at #2, “Jingle Bells” by both The Singing Dogs and, separately, Barbra Streisand at 3 and 4, with “12 Days of Guido Christmas” by the Ha Ya Doin’ Boys coming in at #5.
I’m sure you radio guys out there have your own Top Five for worst Christmas songs as you program the upcoming weeks. Just so you know, the researcher’s Top 5 were Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” Burl Ives’ “Holly Jolly Christmas,” Celine Dion’s “O Holy Night,” Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” and John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War Is Over).” Was this sponsored by the AARP?
