Ian Curtis Film In The Works

It seems that films like 24 Hour Party People and constant name-checking [the lazy comparison to Interpol was even made by Peter Dinklage last night on some show on ABC] has had it’s effect on a UK institution. Behold! A film biopic about the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis is in the works this year it was announced on MusicWeek. It is to be called Touching From A Distance, after a book by Curtis’ widow, Deborah. One of the more enigmatic characters in music history, Curtis has not only lived on through the body of music he helped create as one of Manchester, England’s more influential bands, but stands out unfortunately for the fact that he took his own life just as his career was taking off. The singer hung himself the night before he was to leave for his maiden US tour. And with former Factory Records honcho and Manc icon Anthony Wilson and widow Deborah acting as executive producers, it should be a well anticipated movie. Wilson added, “This is much more than the music – they want to do the real story of Ian.” The film is to be directed by Dutch-born Anton Corbijn, famed for making music movies for Depeche Mode and U2. Hopefully Steve Koogan will reprise his role as Tony Wilson as seen in 24 Hour Party People. Cue “Love Will Tear Us Apart” in your head. Enjoy.
