Influential Memphis Recording Studio Damaged

Some sad news for a variety of reasons, as a fire has destroyed the Easley McCain recording studio in Memphis. This influential studio has been the home for some legendary sessions including Jeff Buckley’s final recordings before he died.

According to NME, an electrical fire broke out on March 2, which caused considerable damage to the studio. Engineer Kevin Cubbins told Rolling Stone: “The (fire) inspector said that two fires broke out at the same time at opposite ends of the building, due to some electrical reason. Within 15, 20 seconds, the whole place was engulfed.”

This studio was the home to sessions by Sonic Youth, The White Stripes, Guided By Voices, Wilco, Loretta Lynn and countless others. Besides the damage the building, the fire also destroyed the new album from the Silver Jews. The master tapes had been delivered to the studio for mastering on the morning of the fire.

About the destruction of the studio, Wilco bassist John Stirratt said: “It’s unbelievable. Really, really sad. If you tried to record in Memphis before Easley, you had to work with, well, born-agains. Easley was the first place to reflect how hip and weird and diverse Memphis really is — the great, weird underbelly.”
