Cingular Offers Music Before Radio

Remember last week when we commented on the different places song ads were popping up and how promotional ideas were changing? (Click here) Apparently there is a new service that is out there that is going to change the way most people are exposed to new music.

Starting today, one major cell phone company is debuting new music singles from top artists as cell phone ring tones before they are available to listen to on the radio. With the ring tone market bringing in an estimated $3 billion dollars it seems like it was the next step. Subscribers to Cingular Wireless will be lucky enough to receive the new service. The new program launches “Cingular Sounds” with the new Coldplay track “Speed Of Sound”, which will not be available for radio to play until April 18.

Cingular’s site says that they will offer music ranging from alternative/rock, hip-hop/R&B, pop, Latin, and country to it’s 50 million subscribers. The Tripwire wonders if this means the next indie band du jour will be included in this service in the future. Will it be indie label friendly as much as major label friendly? Time will tell, but for now when you call me I will be rocking out to “Speed Of Sound”.
