Verizon Offers New Ringback Tones

Ringtones have become a huge revenue stream over the past few years, with kids rackin’ up bills on their parents’ credit cards so that their phones can crank out the latest hit song when receiving calls. That’s all well and good, but if you don’t want to hear that annoying ringing sound on your end, what makes you think that your friends want to hear it when they call you? Thankfully, the days of the standard ring are numbered. No longer will we need to hear the annoying sound of chiming bells when calling people… besides, that’s like soooo 2004. Now, with the advent of Ringback tones, you can replace the “ring ring ring” which people hear when they call you with one of a number of hit songs like Green Day’s “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” or Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back”.

As of right now, Verizon is the only company offering this service to its customers and their Ringback Tone library has a decent amount of songs to offer. Surprisingly, tracks from The Replacements, The Afghan Whigs, Ministry, Uncle Tupelo and even Son Volt are available. There’s not much in the way of new music though, except a track from the Killers here and there and an Unwritten Law tune or two.

Labels, get on board. I hear these things are huge in Europe and Asia. We’re next.
