Coldplay Album Artwork Decoded

By now you have seen the cover art for Coldplay’s upcoming new album X&Y. If not, look to the right and you will see the cover in all of its Tetris-like glory. So what in the hell is it? It seems the folks at XFM have finally cracked the mystery behind this abstract art. It turns out that the blocks are graphical representations based on some form of binary code called “Baudot”. Brace yourself for the next part of the explanation. The code generates a “base5 binary representation for each letter or character in the western alphabet.” Confused? Me too. If you want a technical explanation of Baudot code, have your brains turned to tapioca by clicking here.

So what does it all mean? Simply, the blocks translate to X&Y. I am sure you will all sleep better tonight knowing the mystery behind this very odd album artwork. If you want to hear the first single off the album, “Speed Of Sound”, simply turn on your radio as Coldplay’s radio invasion has officially begun. That is, if you still have an alternative station in your market. If you want to create your own version of the album art using different text, click here to waste some time at work with the X&Y Artwork Generator.
