Monday night, a group of 125 independent record labels initiated a new trade group called the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM). The goal of the group is to give indie businesses the power their collective market share deserves as the ever-evolving music business continues to change at an exponential rate due to new technologies. Steve Gottlieb, CEO of TVT Records and a member of A2IM’s board of directors, told C|Net, “If the marketplace understands better how important the independent community is, there will be greater opportunity.”
The group’s primary focus will be on the transformation of the online music marketplace and other digital distribution avenues with the hopes of securing better rates from digital music services in order to receive a higher percentage of the revenue from the sale of digital music.
The new group is to be applauded for doing all they can to level the playing field with the Big 4. The stranglehold multi-national corporations have over the music world is only perpetuating the cookie-cutter, take-no-chances, poisoning of popular culture and I, for one, am excited about the possibilities the digital age will bring to those companies and artists who view music as something more unique and special than a box of cereal or a stick of gum or a car battery.
