The short-lived, but influential, ‘70s group New York Dolls have had followers with everyone from The Clash, to The Darkness. Even Morrissey was president of their fan club back in the day. Now, almost thirty years after the band begun, first time filmmaker Greg Whiteley is releasing a documentary about the group.
The subject of the film came naturally as Greg was friends with Arthur “Killer” Kane, bassist for New York Dolls. The new film is chock full of people speaking of the importance of the Dolls including Bob Geldof, Chrissie Hynde, Morrissey, Iggy Pop and Mick Jones. It also centers on the June 2004 band reunion and focuses on life after stardom. “I’ve been demoted from rock star to schlep on the bus,” states Kane, who made ends meet appearing as an extra on Spaceballs and had several failed band attempts. Even frontmant David Hohansen took his toll in a TV version of Scrooged, where his alcoholic fit led to the breakup of his marriage and his discovery of the Mormon Church. The film is scheduled to come out in October, and has already been screened at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
